  • Born in 1982 in Bar Harbor, Maine
  • Grew up in Nashville, Tennessee and Xenia, Ohio
  • First became involved in political activism as a Boston University freshman, in the wake of the 1999 Amadou Diallo incident where an unarmed black illegal immigrant was gunned down by New York City police officers who mistakenly thought they saw him reaching for a gun in his pocket
  • Displaying a placard inscribed with the words "NO MORE," DuBois stood before a Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial in Boston for 41 hours as a way to protest the 41 bullets New York City policemen had fired at Diallo.
  • Is an ordained Pentecostal minister
  • Became an associate pastor at a Massachusetts church while still an undergraduate
  • Earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Boston University in 2003
  • Earned a master’s degree in public affairs from Boston University in 2005
  • Earned a master’s degree in international affairs from Princeton University
  • Worked as an intern for Rep. Rush Holt (D-New Jersey)
  • Worked as an intern and as a fellow for Rep. Charles Rangel (D-New York)
  • After watching Barack Obama's speech to the 2004 Democratic National Convention on television, DuBois decided he wanted to work for Obama, who was then running for the U.S. Senate. (DuBois suspended his pursuit of a J.D. at the Georgetown University Law Center to join Obama's campaign.)
  • Was hired by Obama as a Senate aide in May 2005
  • Was appointed director of religious affairs for the Obama presidential campaign in 2008
  • Was a blogger for the pro-Obama website Organizing For America in 2008
