  • Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Earned a BA from Pennsylvania State University in 1976, an MA in economics from Harvard University in 1980, and a PhD in economics from Harvard in 1982
  • After completing his schooling, he taught at Carnegie Mellon University until 1986.
  • Was an assistant/associate professor in the Department of Economics at Michigan State University, 1986 to 1990
  • Became associate professor of economics at the University of Maryland in 1990
  • Became a full professor of economics in 1992
  • Was Deputy Secretary and Chief Economist at the Labor Department under President Clinton (1997 to 1998)
  • Has been Dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Maryland since 2003
  • Made $1,200 in political donations in 2008, all of which went to Obama’s presidential campaign
  • After Obama’s election to the presidency in 2008, Montgomery led the Labor Department’s presidential transition team.
  • Was named by Obama to the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry in February 2009
  • Was appointed by Obama (in March 2009) as Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers.
  • Stepped down from his position as Director of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers in June 2010.
